How to Optimize Image Engraving in LaserGRBL for Best Results

1. Image Preparation (Pre-engraving)

1.1 Choose the Right Image

High contrast and clear contours are best.

Avoid complex backgrounds or blurry photos.

1.2 Image Editing

Use software like Photoshop or GIMP:

Increase contrast for more distinct blacks and whites.

Adjust brightness to prevent the image from being too dark or too bright.

Apply sharpening to enhance details.

Convert to black & white (grayscale is also fine; further processing can be done in LaserGRBL).

2. LaserGRBL Import Settings

When importing an image (Menu → File → Open File), the Import Raster Image window appears. This is crucial:

2.1 Image Mode (Conversion Tool)

Dithering → Recommended; works well for most photos.

Atkinson / Stucki / Floyd-Steinberg → Different algorithms and finer dot patterns can befor the best detail.

Grayscale → Laser power changes with pixel brightness and requires stable laser power control to avoid overburn or low contrast.

2.2 Line-to-Line Tracing (L2L)

Works like “line-by-line scanning,” ideal for image engraving.

Quality sets line spacing and determines resolution:

0.1 mm = 10 lines/mm

0.05 mm = 20 lines/mm

For Ray5 mini/miniS 2.5W / 3.5W, 20 lines/mm is recommended for clear wood details.

2.3 Brightness/Contrast/Gamma

Adjust in the import wizard in real time:

Increase contrast for sharper details.

Lower brightness to avoid over-darkening.

Gamma between 0.8 and 1.2 to adjust grayscale levels.

3. Engraving Parameter Settings

3.1 Feed Rate (Speed)

Wood: 2500–3500 mm/min (adjust power accordingly).

Leather/Paper: 3000–8000 mm/min.

3.2 Laser Power (S-Value)

GRBL default: S1000 (max power = 1000).

Set Min Power / Max Power when importing.

Typically 20–90% of max power depending on material.

4. Optimization

4.1 Focus

Always adjust the focal point before engraving. Smaller spot size = sharper details.

4.2 Cooling & Airflow

Use lower airflow during engraving to avoid smoke darkening the image.

High airflow is for cutting only.

5. Practical Tips

Test small samples: Try different power/speed combinations on scrap material first.

Save parameters: LaserGRBL allows saving G-code settings for reuse.

Sectional engraving: For images with many tonal layers, engrave bright and dark areas separately to enhance contrast.
